From our first steps through the doors of St. Luke Orthodox Church in Garden Grove, CA, we knew we had found something special! What started as a search for a place to worship quickly turned into discovering a family that embraced us with open arms and made us feel at home from day one.
🕊️ How We Discovered St. Luke
I was cradle Catholic and, after many years of waiting, I had finally decided to start the Catechism program at St. Hedwig, the closest Catholic church to home. My wife, on the other hand, who was not baptized yet, was still exploring various Christian denominations. She had looked into several Christian traditions and although unsure where we belonged, she felt drawn towards Orthodoxy.
When she brought up Orthodoxy, I wasn't having any of it. However, our kitchen debates on which church was the "true church" started chipping away at my Catholic armor. The more we dug in, the tougher it became for me to stick with the Catholic Church—a church whose history wasn't just peppered with power-driven crimes but also marked by continuous tweaks to core Christian traditions.
If you want to find out more about my journey to Orthodoxy check out this post:
Long story short, after many many many hours of debates and a deep dive into the history of the Church, I had decided to explore Orthodoxy. Particularely the Antiochian Orthodox Church, the church established by the Apostles Peter and Paul even before they arrived in Rome.
Our journey led us to St. Luke Orthodox Church, the closest Antiochian Orthodox church to our home. Little did we know that this church would become more than just a place of worship—it would become our family.
🚶♂️ Journey to Baptism at Saint Luke
1. First Visit and Warm Welcome
When we first stepped into St. Luke Orthodox Church, we immediately felt an overwhelming sense of welcome. Parishioners greeted us with kindness and invited us to coffee hour after the Sunday Divine Liturgy. We were surprised and touched by the number of converts from Catholic and Protestant backgrounds. Their stories and warmth made us eager to return and explore more about the Antiochian Orthodox Church.
2. Becoming Part of the Community
What started as a split schedule between the Catholic and the Orthodox church progressively became a full commitment to the Antiochian Church. And after close to half a year attending the Catechism program at Saint Hedwig, I left the Catholic Church to devote my full attention to the teaching of the Orthodox Church.
In the meantime, my wife had become involved with the Ladies of St. Luke, joining their Tuesday Bible study groups. The kindness and genuine interest from the women in the group were deeply moving. She found herself enjoying the Bible studies immensely, and the supportive and loving environment made her feel connected and valued. This sparked a genuine interest in the teachings of the Orthodox Christian faith.
After a few months of attending services and getting to know the community, we decided it was time to fully commit to Orthodoxy and reached out to Father Michael, the head priest at Saint Luke.
3. Catechumen Classes at Saint Luke
We were warmly welcomed into the catechumen classes under the supervision of Jack. These small, cozy Tuesday evening sessions quickly became a cherished part of our week. Our kids didn't particularly like attending the classes with us, but Jack was very understanding and let them read or get on their tablets while we took the class. They took the kids' Sunday classes instead. The teachings on Orthodox Christianity, the history of the Church, and the role of the Holy Spirit were both enlightening and transformative.
4. Great Lent and Choosing Sponsors
As our journey continued, the services during Great Lent further deepened our faith. The Great Vespers and other Lenten services were profoundly beautiful and spiritually enriching. When it came time to choose sponsors for our baptism and chrismation, we were initially hesitant, worried about imposing on our new friends. However, the St. Luke community stepped up eagerly, showing us once again their generosity and support. Our sponsors provided us with beautiful icons and crosses, and their guidance was invaluable.
5. Baptism and Chrismation
Our baptism and Chrismation were profound experiences. Surrounded by the loving community of St. Luke, we felt the presence of the Holy Spirit as we were welcomed fully into the Orthodox Christian faith. The support and celebration from the community were incredible, making this milestone even more special. After Pascha, our sponsors and other parishioners invited us into their homes and families to celebrate the Resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ. This sense of belonging and family was beyond anything we had experienced before.

1. Leadership
1. Leadership
The leadership at St. Luke Orthodox Church has been incredibly supportive and available to our family throughout our journey. V. Rev. Fr. Michael Tassos (Pastor), V. Rev. Fr. Jon Fate (Assistant Priest), and Protodeacon Stephen Bell (Deacon) have shown unwavering dedication to our spiritual growth and well-being.
Fr. Michael was always available to answer our questions, whether in person after the service or during church hours. If we couldn't reach him in person, he would promptly respond to our calls or texts. His kindness and understanding made him easy to talk to. One particular moment that stood out was when he offered to have an 'à la carte' catechumen program tailored for our family, as our kids felt a bit shy. Although we ultimately joined the regular program, we were deeply touched by his offer.
Fr. Jon also provided us with answers whenever Fr. Michael was unavailable. Even though he wasn’t our spiritual advisor, his kindness and openness to help were invaluable. We are grateful for his support and guidance.
Deacon Nicholas was another key figure during our journey, especially during Lent. He regularly checked in on us to ensure we had all the answers we needed and provided much-needed guidance.
And then there was Jack. We’re not entirely sure of Jack’s official title—he’s a reader, a chanter, handles the technology, oversees the catechumen program, the youth program, Bible studies, and more. From day one, Jack has been our go-to person for answers and support. He taught us during the catechumen program, organized the retreats we attended, and led most of the Bible studies. He stood by our side during our baptism and continues to be available for any questions we have. All of this while preparing for his wedding and guiding other parishioners.
The dedication and kindness of St. Luke's leadership have truly made this church a home for us. Their unwavering support has guided us through every step of our journey, making our spiritual growth and integration into the community seamless and heartfelt.
2. Liturgies and Services
2. Liturgies and Services
The services at St. Luke Orthodox Church are truly something special. They’re beautiful and spiritually enriching, drawing you deeper into the Orthodox Christian faith. The Sunday Divine Liturgy is at the heart of it all, connecting us to sacred traditions dating back to the first century. The atmosphere is reverent and solemn, with the choir singing and the clergy leading the congregation in prayer.
But the magic of St. Luke’s services goes beyond the Sunday Divine Liturgy. Special services, like those on Palm Sunday and the Resurrection of Lazarus, are deeply moving and celebratory. The processions, where parishioners carry palm branches or icons, bring everyone together in shared devotion.
One of our most unforgettable experiences was Pascha (Easter). The night service began in darkness, with everyone holding unlit candles. As the service progressed, the flame from the Paschal candle was passed from one person to the next, slowly lighting up the church with a warm, flickering glow. When the entire church was aglow and we began the procession around the church, it was absolutely magical. Parents and children, united in celebration, walked together, singing hymns that echoed the joy of the Resurrection of Christ.
After the service, way past midnight, we all moved to the church community room. Father Michael blessed the baskets we had brought to celebrate the end of the fast, and then we all sat together, sharing a meal that symbolized our unity and faith. It was a moment of pure joy and fellowship, unlike anything we had experienced before.
Unlike larger churches with extensive volunteer teams, St. Luke relies on the dedication and devotion of its parishioners to bring these services to life. Every detail, from preparing the church to coordinating processions and community meals, is handled by volunteers. This collective effort is a testament to the kindness and faith of all members, who work tirelessly to make each service beautiful and meaningful.
St. Luke’s commitment to maintaining the beauty and sanctity of Orthodox worship is evident in every service. The dedication of the parishioners ensures that each liturgical event is not just a reflection of ancient traditions but also a vibrant expression of our living faith. Whether you’re attending a regular Sunday service or a special event like Holy Week, you’ll find a welcoming community ready to share their faith and joy with you.
